My Blog Post About Mental Illness Went Viral

It’s been seven days since my blog post What Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, Me and 45 Million Americans Have In Common was published on my little blog. Thank you. Thank you for everyone that read the post, shared it, sent it to their friends or family, and subscribed to my blog.

I’m SO blown away by the response I’ve received from my article.

At the time of me publishing this blog post, my blog has been viewed 120k times and shared 58,870 times!!!! Wow wow wow.

I’m completely blown away. I’m filled with gratitude from all of the kind messages I’ve received. Many people posted my article on their Facebook saying, “Everyone needs to read this” or that it’s, “The best thing they’ve ever read about mental illness.”

I’ve had friends and strangers reach out to me saying that my post perfectly articulated their own struggles or helped them understand the struggle of a loved one. I’ve had friends and strangers say that my writing encouraged and inspired them to seek help and to not feel ashamed about it.  It’s astonishing how many people private messaged ME, a random person, not a mental health pro, saying they need help, feel hopeless but don’t know what to do. It makes me feel so sad that there are so many people who feel so hopeless. I’m grateful they felt comfortable enough to reach out to me because they connected with my writing, but all I can offer are a few kind words of encouragement. I don’t think that’s enough. What else can I do?  What else can we do?

Never in my life did I think something I wrote could reach and effect this many people. I’ve touched strangers all over the world with my words.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

My heart is so full. I can’t believe something I wrote while laying in bed one night has touched this many people. I just… Wow.


I wanted to take this opportunity to answer some questions from Facebook comments and comments I got on the blog post itself.

Am I going to write a book?

Um, yes, some day. It’s one of my lifelong goals. I can’t believe how many people asked me this! So, if you know any literary agents… send them my way.

  2. When I shared your post I fully shared my anxiety and depression. You and everyone who is being open about their journey has given me freedom to be open too, but there was something about your article that had me saying “do it!”. I also have had a PTSD diagnosis (EMDR worked great, only have a few flares here and there), and Fibromyalgia. It’s the chronic anxiety that is the worst to deal with. Thanks for being a light Becca!
