For the last few days I’ve been visiting the Bay Area. My sister officially moved to SF so I spent the last few days helping her design her new apartment and eat all the things.
I was born and raised in the East Bay; being here visiting brings back a lot of memories of my youth, visiting SF to go shopping for CDs or to see punk bands at venues with walls plastered with secrets and screams.
I start to wonder how much of my identity is tied to the place I grew up and the areas surrounding it? How many memories are tied to places in the cities surrounding the city by the bay? How much do we remember from locations from our past, and what makes some places more memorable than others?
The vintage Balenciaga scarf I’m wearing was given to my grandmother Ruth as a gift from her ex-sister-in-law, known affectionately in my family as Auntie Vi. I never knew her–only from twice-removed stories or hearsay.
What I do know is that she was one of the first women CPA’s in California. The way my mother spoke of Auntie Vi was always fancy or stylish–the way I aspire to be now. It feels appropriate that I wear her scarf as a reminder of her in her city.
